Papaya is a sweet, tropical fruit packed with vitamins and fiber. If your dog gives you puppy eyes while you’re enjoying a slice, you may wonder whether you can share. Can dogs eat papaya? Yes. Ripe papaya flesh is safe for most dogs in small amounts. Just remove the seeds and skin first.

Benefits of papaya for dogs

Papaya contains:

Most dogs get all the nutrients they need from a complete, balanced dog food. Papaya is best thought of as an occasional, healthy treat rather than a supplement.

Risks of feeding papaya

Seeds

Papaya seeds should be removed. They can upset the stomach, and a large amount could contribute to a blockage, especially in small dogs. They also contain small amounts of compounds that aren’t good for dogs in large quantities.

Skin

Papaya skin is tough and hard to digest. It can cause stomach upset or, in rare cases, a blockage. Always peel papaya before sharing.

Too much sugar and fiber

Papaya is naturally sweet. Too much can cause:

Dogs with diabetes or weight problems should only have fruit if their vet says it’s okay.

Dried and processed papaya

Skip dried papaya, papaya candy, canned papaya in syrup and papaya smoothies. These are often very high in sugar and may contain added ingredients. Always check labels for xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Our article on what to do if your dog ate sugar-free gum explains why xylitol is so dangerous.

How to give your dog papaya

  1. Choose ripe papaya. It should be soft and orange inside.
  2. Wash, peel and cut the fruit in half.
  3. Scoop out all the seeds.
  4. Cut the flesh into small cubes, sized for your dog.
  5. Start with one or two pieces and watch for stomach upset.

You can also mash papaya and add a little to a lick mat, or freeze small cubes for a cool summer snack.

How much papaya can dogs eat?

Treats, including fruit, should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. As a rough guide:
