The first few months of a puppy’s life are a special window for learning. Positive experiences during this time help puppies grow into confident, friendly adult dogs. Puppies that miss out may be more fearful or reactive later. Here’s what puppy socialization means, when to start and how to do it safely.

What is puppy socialization?

Socialization means gently introducing your puppy to new people, animals, places, sounds and experiences in a positive way. The goal isn’t just exposure. It’s helping your puppy feel safe and comfortable with the world.

The puppy socialization period

Puppies have a sensitive period for socialization, from about 3 weeks to 12 to 14 weeks of age. During this time, puppies are more open to new experiences. After this window, new things can feel scarier.

Socialization should continue throughout your dog’s first year and beyond, but those early weeks matter most.

Puppy socialization before vaccines

Many pet parents worry about disease, like parvovirus, before vaccines are complete. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends that puppies can start socialization classes as early as 7 to 8 weeks of age, as long as they’ve had at least their first set of vaccines and deworming, at least 7 days before the first class.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to socialize an older puppy?

No. Older puppies and adult dogs can still learn, though progress may be slower.

Are dog parks good for socialization?

Not for young puppies. Controlled meetings with known dogs are safer.
