A dog swollen paw often goes hand in hand with limping, licking or chewing at the foot. The cause can be as simple as a splinter or an insect sting, or as serious as an infection or a broken toe. Here is how to check the paw and know when your dog needs a vet.

If your dog will let you, look in good light:
Go slowly. A painful dog may snap.
See a vet if your dog:
Go to an emergency vet if swelling comes with facial swelling, hives or trouble breathing, which may be an allergic reaction. See dog swollen face.

Do not give human pain relievers like ibuprofen or naproxen. They can be toxic to dogs. See ibuprofen and Tylenol poisoning.
If your dog is limping but the paw looks normal, see my dog is limping but still playing.
Interdigital cysts, foreign objects, infections and allergies are common causes. A vet can find the reason.
A short soak in clean, lukewarm water can help with minor dirt. Ask a vet before adding anything to the water.
